it says to apply sunscreen to all areas not shielded by the hat. I called the company and they said not to use sunscreen on the skin if you want the light to hit it. This hat is not enough to protect your skin though. use at your own risk...

I really liked the idea that this hat could be a treatment and sun protection at the same time. However, this is a catch. If you want the therapeutic light to treat your skin, you are advised not to wear sunscreen with this hat. This is a problem because your facial skin is inundated by sun from angles at which this hat doesn't protect you. As a result, I got slightly sunburned and more freckles both times I tried it. As a result, I cannot recommend this item. I also can't speak of any results from the light.
