Unwanted Pigmentation - Treating Freckles, Melasma, and Scars
February 9, 2001
Dr. Taylor's favorite time of the year was winter. Why? Because it was the optimal time to "fix" damage done to the skin during the summer.
With the exception of those who live in tropical climates, winter allows a few months of minimal sun exposure. This makes it the perfect time to do things such as laser peels, hair removal, and bleaching.
For those who do not know, unwanted pigmentation includes dark areas in the skin that are caused by sun exposure(freckles), hormones (melasma), or trauma (scars). They most often occur on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, shoulders, arms and legs. The best way to avoid these problems is to wear sunblock or stay out of direct sunlight.
Because summer is still a few months away, now is the optimal time to start getting rid of unwanted pigmentation. Sun is the worst enemy for all kinds of pigment problems such as freckles, scars, and melasma. The sun also deactivates hydroquinone, a bleaching solution, when exposed to the sunlight, making treatment even more difficult when done during the summer.
Also, pigmentation takes months to fade - it does take time. The earlier you start on your program, the more ready you will be to show off your skin this summer.
